The California Ocean Uses Atlas Project
The California Ocean Uses Atlas Project is an innovative public-private partnership between NOAA’s Marine Protected Areas Center and Marine Conservation Biology Institute. Funded by grants from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation, the Atlas project fills a critical information gap in ocean management by mapping, for the first time, the full range of significant human uses of the ocean in state and federal waters of the coast of California. Maps of ocean uses are being created by regional ocean experts through participatory GIS workshops in four regions throughout California. Data, maps and analytical products are being produced and made available to state and federal agencies, stakeholders and other interested parties. Southern California Ocean Uses Atlas Products
The California Ocean Uses Atlas is collecting geospatial information on nearly 30 different human uses of the ocean off the state of California. Gathered in a series of four workshops conducted throughout the state, the atlas data provides baseline information regarding the location and extent to which the ocean environment is used for non-consumptive, industrial/military and fishing uses. The results from the Southern California workshops are the first to be made publicly available. Stay tuned as the rest of the state is mapped and posted.
GIS Data
The ocean uses GIS data, derived products and interactive mapping tools will be posted on this web site in the near future.
Maps
The links below provide samples of the types of mapping products that are being derived from initial processing and analysis of the Southern California Atlas GIS data. These maps lend insight into how the spatial data can be used to inform ocean management decisions and identify hot spots and potential conflict zones for various combinations of ocean uses in Southern California.

The links below provide additional background documents and related resources for the California Ocean Uses Atlas Project and the Southern California Atlas Workshop.
Where Next?
Our aim is to create Ocean Uses Atlases for all US waters as quickly as possible. To that end, we are actively seeking interested partners in coastal states and regions, and in other public and private entitites.
