Archives - Inventory Atlas
Maps are an excellent tool
to understand the spatial composition and complexity of the
marine protected areas inventory efforts. The Inventory Atlas
provides a set of maps designed to furnish a visual, geographic
context for the MMA Inventory..
The inventory effort includes assembling electronic spatial
data (boundary files) in tandem with the detailed information
being gathered on the management of individual sites as provided
in the site profiles. In cases where these files do not exist,
they are being developed by a geographic information team.
These files will be used to produce thematic series of maps
that will be presented here, in the Inventory Atlas. These
series will allow users to see various combinations of programs,
selected mpa networks, and regions of the country. The Atlas
will evolve as the information in the inventory becomes richer.

Locator
maps provide the general geographic positions
of a specific grouping of sites, for example, all National
Estuarine Research Reserves. They are intended solely
as quick reference guides. Presently, there are 11 locator
maps, covering national programs and selected state sites.

Regional
maps display the actual spatial boundaries of
combinations of inventory sites for various regions of
the nation. This new series is being initiated with a
map of national programs in the South Atlantic. Additional
maps of national programs for other regions will be added
every one to two months.
